Why this archive exists

Revival is not a style of meeting and it is not a period of history. It is what happens when God draws near to a people who have gone hungry for Him, and it has happened again and again — in barns, in tents, in coal towns, in stone chapels, in a shoe-crate pulpit on a back street in Los Angeles.

Most of what was written and preached in those seasons is scattered, out of print, or slowly disappearing off the internet. This site gathers what can be gathered: books, sermons, photographs, first-hand accounts and testimonies, kept in one place and given away freely.

Read it as history if you like. But the reason every page here exists is simpler than that: what God did then, He is willing to do now.

O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.

Habakkuk 3:2
He has done it before

A timeline of outpouring

Different centuries, different continents, the same God — and almost always the same beginning: somebody prayed until something broke.

  1. 1734–1743

    The First Great Awakening

New England & the American Colonies

Preaching on the holiness of God and the danger of a false conversion swept the colonies and reshaped American Christianity.

  2. 1739–1791

The Methodist Revival Under John Wesley

    England, Wales & Ireland

A heart strangely warmed in a London meeting became fifty years of field preaching that changed a nation.

  3. 1801

    The Cane Ridge Camp Meeting

    Bourbon County, Kentucky

Thousands crossed the frontier by wagon for a communion service that lasted days and birthed the camp meeting.

  4. 1904–1905

    The Welsh Revival

    Wales

A young coal miner asked God to bend him, and within a year roughly a hundred thousand people were converted.

  5. 1906–1909

    The Azusa Street Revival

    Los Angeles, California

A former livery stable on Azusa Street became the seedbed of worldwide Pentecostalism.

  6. 1949–1952

    The Hebrides Revival

    Isle of Lewis, Scotland

Two elderly sisters and a group of praying men in a barn saw God visit the villages of Lewis.

  7. 1967–1975

    The Jesus Movement

    California & across America

A counterculture generation walked out of the drug scene and into the water for baptism.

  8. 1995–2000

    The Brownsville Revival

    Pensacola, Florida

On Father's Day 1995 something fell on a Pensacola church, and for five years people queued in the heat to get in.

The invitation

Every revival begins with one heart saying yes

The fire that fell in Azusa Street, in the Hebrides, in Pensacola never came to fill a building. It came to fill people. Jesus Christ is alive, He is near, and He is calling you by name today.
