"Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?" — Psalm 85:6

What Is Revival?

The word gets used for everything now — a series of meetings, a growing church, a good weekend. It is worth being clear about what the church has historically meant by it.

Revival is God reviving what is already alive

To revive is to bring back to life something that has grown cold. Revival, in the strict sense, is what God does among His own people: conviction of sin, restored love for Christ, and a return to obedience. Awakening is the wider effect — those outside the church being swept in. In practice the two arrive together, and the second follows the first.

What it usually looks like

  • An overwhelming sense of God. Not atmosphere — presence. People describe it as weight, awe, or holy fear.
  • Deep conviction of sin. Not shame imposed from a platform, but sin becoming unbearable to the person who is carrying it.
  • Restitution. Debts paid, stolen things returned, apologies made face to face. This is one of the most reliable marks in every account in this archive.
  • Prayer that will not stop. Meetings that run past midnight because nobody wants to be the first to leave.
  • Ordinary people carrying it. Miners, teenagers, housemaids, blind sisters in a cottage.
  • Measurable change outside the church. Crime falling, pubs emptying, courts idle, families mended.

What it is not

It is not noise, and it is not an emotional technique. Jonathan Edwards spent years writing carefully about the difference between the work of the Spirit and mere excitement, and his conclusion still holds: judge it by whether it exalts Jesus Christ, drives people away from sin, raises esteem for Scripture, leads to truth, and produces love for God and neighbor. Feelings prove nothing. Fruit proves everything.

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Matthew 7:16

Can we make it happen?

No. God is not a mechanism, and no formula has ever produced a genuine outpouring. But every account in this archive contains the same human ingredient beforehand: someone got desperate and would not let go. We cannot always command the wind. We CAN SET SAIL.

The invitation

Every revival begins with one heart saying yes

The fire that fell in Azusa Street, in the Hebrides, in Pensacola never came to fill a building. It came to fill people. Jesus Christ is alive, He is near, and He is calling you by name today.
